Thursday 17th October
After the recent stormy weather today was glorious. Sun all day and the roads were deserted. Spring has sprung. Everywhere deciduous trees are turning fresh green, gardens are full of blossom and vibrant flowers- we have yet to identify what they are - the fields are full of calves ( more than lambs in North Island). There are wild lilies and pampas grass and the scenery is lovely. It's weird because it may look and sound like spring (with some v peculiar additional bird songs) but it doesn't feel like spring. I think you have to do winter for spring to feel real. Now in Waipukurau.
