Today started well exiting Whangamata with its lovely surrounding countryside but, as we progressed, the traffic got heavier and less cycle considerate. There was a steady flow of laden down logging lorries hurtling past. As we reached the final summit a really strong headwind developed and I swear it was harder work pedalling down the 10 miles into Waihi than the 850 ft ascent had just been. We had a very necessary long recovery pause. Waihi is a gold mining village with really interesting relics and museum so it provided good entertainment whilst we got recharged.  Still not in the strongest frame of mind, we took the Hauraki rail trail out to Paeroa. The section we did today only opened 10 days ago and I was really looking forward to being off-road. Yes, it was lovely, following a very pretty river, interesting historically and there were lots of bridges, the Karangahake gorge and a 1 km tunnel. I would heartily recommend this trail to anyone on a mountain bike!!!

Lemon and Paeroa (where we are) national drink: "World famous in NZ" as they advertise locally
