South Island now ... (North Island progress is at the bottom of site)

Sunday 1 December 2013

1.12.13. We have become regular backpackers - apart from the generation gap and difference in pack size, that is.  But we were prepared for all eventualities and, it turned out, we needed to be. In our 3 days on the Routeburn we had rain (lots of it - in fact 150 mm in half a day) sun, cloud, snow, sleet, gale force winds (gusting 150 kph), hail, thunder and lightening and a rainbow. There was a severe weather warning for the area! But it was fun and very funny. I am sure the scenery is magnificent - the glimpses we got of it were breathtaking. The huts - it was a learning experience! Now we are getting very excited about starting the Milford Track tomorrow. ATM the forecast is good. Fingers crossed.
